Ask, and ask soon

The single biggest reason trades have few reviews is that they never ask. The work was good, the customer was pleased, and nobody said anything — so the only people who leave reviews unprompted are the unhappy ones.

Timing matters more than wording. The same evening, while the relief is fresh, converts far better than a week later when it has become a thing that got sorted.

Make it a small ask

The barrier is effort, not willingness. A direct link, a named platform, and permission to write one line removes almost all of it. 'A sentence is plenty' genuinely increases the number of reviews you get.

Text usually beats email for this, because the link opens on the phone already signed in to the account they would review from.

Two things this refuses, and why they matter

It will not offer an incentive — no discount, gift, prize draw or money off the next job in exchange for a review. Incentivised reviews breach the policies of every major platform and fall foul of consumer protection rules in many places. The penalty is losing the reviews you already have.

It also will not help you screen customers so only the happy ones get asked. Review gating is explicitly prohibited by Google and has been the subject of regulatory action. Ask everybody, and treat a poor review as information rather than a disaster — a business with fifty reviews averaging 4.6 reads as more trustworthy than one with twelve perfect ones.
