What SEER actually measures
SEER is cooling delivered per unit of electricity across a season. Higher is more efficient, and the relationship is proportional: a SEER 16 unit uses roughly half the electricity of a SEER 8 unit to do the same job.
That proportionality is what makes this calculable without knowing anything about your house. If the new unit is twice as efficient, the same cooling costs half as much — whatever the size of the system or the building.
Why this asks for your bill, not your unit
Most SEER calculators ask for tonnage and run hours, then quietly assume a great deal about your home. This one asks what cooling costs you now, because that figure already contains all of it — your climate, your insulation, your thermostat habits and how big the system is.
To estimate it, take your electricity bills across the cooling season and subtract what a mild month costs. The difference is broadly what cooling adds.
What this deliberately will not do
It will not size equipment. Choosing a system capacity is a Manual J load calculation based on your building, and getting it wrong causes real problems — an oversized unit short-cycles, cools unevenly and removes less humidity, despite costing more.
It also ignores installation quality, which routinely matters more than the number on the box. A high-SEER system installed with leaky ducts or a poor charge will not deliver what the label promises.
