Every shop eventually has one: a car finished weeks ago, a customer who stopped answering, and a bay you cannot use. Unlike almost every other trade, you are physically holding the customer's property, and that changes the conversation entirely.
A storage policy will not make somebody collect their car. What it does is remove the argument about whether you were entitled to charge for the time it sat there, by having said so before the work started.
Say it before the work, not after
A storage charge introduced when the customer finally arrives reads as a penalty. The same charge mentioned on the intake form and in the ready-for-collection message reads as a standard term.
The practical version: state the free period and the daily rate when you take the vehicle in, and repeat the daily rate in the message telling them it is ready. That second mention is the one that gets acted on.
Where this stops, deliberately
This generator will describe what you charge and how you notify people. It will not write anything about liens, titles, towing, disposal or selling a vehicle — and it refuses if you ask, which is intentional.
Mechanic's liens and abandoned-vehicle procedures are set by statute in every state, with specific notice periods, formats and deadlines. Getting them wrong is not a bad policy, it is an unlawful act, and no template can be safely written for fifty different sets of rules. When a car reaches that point, that is the moment for an actual lawyer in your state.
